Common Things Occur Commonly
It is far more fruitful to seek an unusual manifestation of a common disorder than a common manifestation of an unusual disorder.
An important principle that surrounds the speed and vigor with which to reverse a disease process is, in general, the faster a disease state manifests itself, the faster it should be reversed: The more catastrophic its manifestation, the greater the vigor that must be applied.
The Unstated Laws of Clinical Medicine
To know the patient is to be open to the patients true nature, to put ones self in anothers place, and gain an insight which is often ineffable for this empathetic voyage.
Over twenty five hundred years ago, Hippocrates, the Father of Western Medicine, uttered his famous admonition, "First, do no harm." To his credit, it has been a guiding principle of medical practice the world over. In truth, the world would be a better place if not only individuals, but also the worlds governments would adhere to this lofty principle.
There are, however, some lesser-known principles, attributed to Hippocrates which we would do well to examine. Hipprocrates once said, "It is better to know the patient, who has the disease than the disease the patient has."
What did he mean by this?
Implicit in this statement is an acknowledgement that the relationship between those who seek help and those who render it is deeply profound and in itself therapeutic. To know the patient is to be open to the patients true nature, to put ones self in anothers place and, for this empathetic voyage, to gain an insight which is often ineffable. The connection and the regenerative feeling which underpins it is incredibly powerful, for with right intention, it transmits a powerfully positive message directly into the unconscious where it is implemented according to the bodys own needs, at the bodys own time.
Unconscious control of bodily function is all encompassing and borders on the miraculous. Do we tell our hearts too beat, at the appropriate rate, at the appropriate volume? Do we instruct the lungs to expel just the right amount of carbon dioxide and to take in just the right amount of oxygen? When we get cut. Do we command the bloody lesion to clot? Do we tell a boil to heal? The answer to all these questions is, "No."
Virtually every single function, which governs our innate well-being is under involuntary control. Indeed, the body has a stored knowledge, which it fully utilizes for our healthful benefit if we dont send it the wrong influences or the wrong messages. And you know its a damn good thing. Imagine how much of our vital mental capacity we would waste if we had to consider and then will each essential bodily function. Again, fortunately for us, the unconscious mind relieves us of this responsibility. It offers a modus to insure our own well being by allowing us to forward to ourselves positive assertions of where we should and can go. There is nothing more important in this process than the therapeutic relationship.
